Revitalizing Helsingørsgade 15-17: Blending Heritage with Innovation
Located on Helsingørsgade, adjacent to the picturesque Slotssøen in Hillerød, the property at numbers 15-17 is undergoing a significant transformation. Acquired by Thylander, this site comprises rental apartments, commercial spaces facing Helsingørsgade, a warehouse, and a partially submerged parking garage towards the lake. The steep terrain towards the lakefront makes the property a prominent feature from the castle island, demanding a thoughtful approach to its redevelopment.
Current Conditions and Vision for the Future
The property on Helsingørsgade requires rejuvenation. The parking garage needs extensive renovation due to water infiltration and neglect, while the warehouse, once housing club rooms, is now dilapidated and slated for demolition. This renewal project aims to revitalize the property, shifting its “backside” character towards the lake to present a new, dignified face towards Frederiksborg Castle.
Respecting Cultural and Historical Context
Originally designed in 1961 by architect Thorvald Dreyer, the property sits in a delicate cultural-historical context beside Slotssøen and Frederiksborg Castle. The redevelopment strategy focuses on integrating modern densification that respects and reflects the historical essence of Hillerød’s city core, ensuring the new construction harmonizes with the surrounding architecture while establishing its contemporary identity.
Retaining Historical Motifs
Helsingørsgade, shaped by the aftermath of the great fire of 1692, features distinct portals and gable dormers, courtesy of Christian V’s mandate. The renovation of numbers 15-17 aims to preserve these historical elements, enhancing the connection between the street and the lake, acknowledging the privilege and responsibility of neighboring the Renaissance Frederiksborg Castle.
Development Strategy
Aligning with Hillerød Municipality’s Architectural Policy and the six benchmarks for quality architecture, the new development adapts to the landscape’s contours along the lakeshore. Enhancements include greening the parking deck to create new public spaces and designing staircases between buildings to connect the elevated courtyard with the lakeside path, enriching the urban fabric.
Building Technique and Sustainability
The new structures will be clad in brick, echoing Frederiksborg Castle’s red hues and integrating material shifts and detailing as a modern interpretation of Renaissance style. Emphasizing minimal environmental impact.
